I have been playing with some bead caddis flies lately. These ones on the right was a test and I sent them to a friend in Colorado to try and they caught a mess of browns. These are quite simple to tie. I used a normal scud hook and pink seed beads. They were tied on a size 16 and the dubbing I used was black squirrel brite from spirit river. The thread is normal mono type. On the heads I will hit it really good with a piece of velcro and tease the fibers towards the back to represent legs
Here is another version that has not been tested yet. Same concept with materials but I used green and pink beads and the head is Medium Olive Squirrel Brite. I used a pink butt again as a test an waiting to hear how they worked. You can use several colors for the head. Below are some of the other colors I have used. Again these are all squirrel brite for the heads.

Nice ties Dustin. I'm curious why you used pink beads rather than brown or black?
ReplyDeleteThe pink ones were for my order so I tied what they wanted. I did send some to colorado 2 months ago and they were very successful and that is why they were ordered. I do make a brown version that is in one of my previous posts
ReplyDeleteNice bunch of bead bodied Caddis. With the beads available in so many colors, a fly fisher should be able to tie to match any of the local colors.
ReplyDeleteexactly! I just happen to have these 2 colors and made the best of it. Thanks mel for your comment
ReplyDeleteSome years ago I was getting skunked regular on a French chalk stream during a micro caddis hatch. I fished a fly much like your green bead one, after finally seine netting some of the naturals.
ReplyDeleteIt worked a treat but had to be fished at the correct level. Again wonderful work Justin.
Have you thought of getting a website going, just selling a selection of your best flies?
Pick maybe 20 of you best, and sell them online?
Regards.
Justin,
ReplyDeleteIf you did I would put a link for you on my site?
Very Nice! I have a little Spring Creek close by. you may have heard of it, Crane Creek. It has a fair population of wild McCloud trout. I'll have to try a few of those bright green
ReplyDeletebead caddis the creek is full of the real ones. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic flies! They look really good and I'm sure will catch their fair share of fish...I can;t wait to see photos of one of those stuck in the mouth of a nice brown or rainbow!
ReplyDeleteI have thought about it but at this junction in my life I don't think I can make it happen just yet. But it has always been in the back of my mind
ReplyDeleteReminds of the pink squirrel. I bet I could slay the fish on those. Great work
ReplyDelete@ John -- It kinda is isn't. Never seen that fly before but looks like I found what I am tying tonight
